FAQ

FullSizeRenderWhat is chip timing and why do I need it for my event?

Chip timing refers to using RFID based timing devices to record times for event participants. These devices can be incorporated into a shoe based chip, a strapped on ankle device or a disposable, one use race timing bib.

Using chip timing ensures fast and accurate result tabulation for posting both online and using for on site event age group awards for the top finishers in your event. Most runners place value in both of these chip timing advantages and when offered a choice will participate in a chip timed event versus a non-chip timed race.

I see references to “chip time” versus “gun time”, what does this mean?

clock3-as[1]Gun time is the time it takes from the official start of the race until the runner crosses the finish line.  This does not account for the amount of time it takes a runner to cross the start line which can take a significant amount of time in larger races.  Gun time is often used for official finish placing for awards.

Chip time takes into account the delay before a runner crosses the start line.  In order to chip time an event there needs to be timing equipment utilized at both the start and finish of the race.  Chip time gives a more accurate representation of how long it took the runner to actually finish the course distance.

I have heard of people complain of result problems at chip timed races, why is that?

Although once in awhile a results error is due to a defective timing device, the vast majority of the time scoring problems are related to some sort of human error where somebody wears a timing device not assigned to them, some of their participant information was incorrect (gender/age) or there was legibility issues with a paper entry form they filled out.  To cut down on errors we encourage all events to utilize online registration which helps minimize data errors tremendously.  We can facilitate getting online registration up and running for your event with no out of pocket expense to you.

What exactly does it cost to have my event chip timed?

There are variables involved in event timing costs (how many timing points, distance/type of event, expected participant numbers, type of timing device used), but in most situations there will be a flat fee as well as a per participant charge.  GMT fee structure is very competitive.

I am organizing a first year or small event (fun run) and don’t need chip timing how can you help ?

Many small events or first year races don’t have the money in their budget to do chip timing but still would like their event to seem more professional or “official”.  In such a case you may be interested in simply renting our race timing clock and/or inflatable finish line arch.  You can find out more information about it here!
